The Parramatta Wildcats women's team continues to struggle for numbers each week and fielded just seven players on Saturday night against the 2005 WABL grand finalists.
There would be no capitulation from the home team however, with head coach Keith Kelman rotating his roster continuously throughout the game in an effort to maintain pressure on the visitors.
There always appeared to be just one conclusion to the game but the Wildcats simply refused to buckle under, restricting the margin to single figures until late in the final quarter.
Among the highlights of the game for local fans was the appearance of former Hills District Hornets junior representative and current Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) scholarship holder Ellie Manou, who is playing for the Nationals during the WNBL off-season.
The other significant feature was the performance of Alyce Shearing for the Nationals, who finished the game with a personal tally of 19 points (8/11), 5 boards, 1 assist and 1 blocked shot in just 13 minutes of court time.
Canberra Nationals 86 (A Shearing 19 points, A Coddington 14, P Sinclair 13 points 13 boards, E Manou 13 points 12 boards, Vicky Bates 10 points) d Parramatta Wildcats 65 (A Garden 19 points, J Taoi 12 points 10 boards, J Warren 10 points 10 boards).
